Artemis V: the next planned lunar surface mission

Artemis V is planned as another lunar surface mission after Artemis IV. NASA currently anticipates launch by late 2028 and describes it as a step toward building a Moon base and flying later missions roughly once per year.

When is Artemis V?

NASA says it anticipates Artemis V by late 2028. That is a planning target, not an announced launch date. The schedule will depend on the missions before it, lander and spacecraft readiness, and safety reviews.

NASA's current plan calls for approximately one Artemis mission each year after that. A regular cadence would give crews more opportunities to test and improve lunar operations.

What is Artemis V meant to do?

NASA describes Artemis V as a lunar surface mission and a beginning for work toward a Moon base. Specific crew, landing site and surface tasks have not been finalized publicly.

The idea is to build on the first return landing rather than treat it as a one-off event. More repeated visits would support science, infrastructure and experience operating near the South Pole.

How does it follow Artemis IV?

Artemis IV is currently targeted as the first crewed lunar landing of the campaign in early 2028. Artemis V would follow with another surface mission using NASA's standardized SLS rocket configuration.

Both timelines remain subject to change. NASA's Artemis overview is the best source for the current mission sequence.
